A short while back on a Wednesday evening an email arrived from Peter Mendelsund: "I have a job that entails a photo I would need taken fairly soon. I've enclosed a mock-up of what I would need. As you can see, it would be a photo of a match in front of a mirror."

"Yes! And- great! Thanks again oote. So glad you can take it on."

Thursday morning I went mirror and matches 'hunting' and made some variations. The reply was: "These are great!!! I need to contemplate for a bit which are my favorites- tho I love them all. You are a master, sir."
Next day: "Man, this was a hard decision. If only you hadn't done such a great job.... I'm especially torn between these two. But... What we should do is: ot1003279.jpg Can you shoot it AS IS..."

And this what he ended up doing for the whole, front and back, book wrapping:

All finished by Friday evening, very late for me as Peter is in New York and I am in France, but that was no problem. I gave him a nice and tranquil weekend as he had to show the job on Monday.
The interesting part is how Peter made the switch from his initial idea to the final result. It shows how with a good concept and flexibility you can make interesting design. Also lets not forget Carol Carson for her insight to pair us.

classic Dutch landscape painting and photography

I do like this old Dutch painting, The Avenue at Middelharnis, 1689 by Meindert Hobbema very much. (In the collection of the The national gallery, London. )
Twenty years back, when I was still living in Holland, I was trying to photograph the same atmosphere but it did not work. After forgetting about the painting and my project, I just find that I made in France this autumn an image that gives me the satisfaction.

Tokyo Sky Tree Broadcasting Tower

Currently under construction in Japan is the Tokyo Sky Tree. Located in the Sumida ward of the capital city, the Tokyo Sky Tree is a broadcasting tower that will become one of the tallest structures on the planet.

Upon completion, the Tokyo Sky Tree will stand 610.58 m (2,003 ft) tall. The tower will not only be the tallest structure in Japan, but the tallest in East Asia as well.

The Tokyo Sky Tree is designed with graceful curves similar to samurai swords and traditional Japanese buildings. The base of the tower is a tripod structure that becomes cylindrical toward the top to withstand strong winds. The tower will incorporate world-class seismic proofing to withstand earthquakes.

Led by Tobu Railway and several broadcasting companies, the Tokyo Sky Tree will be developed at a cost of more than 60 Billion Yen (US $670,000,000).

Construction began on July 14, 2008 and is estimated to be complete in December 2011. The Tokyo Sky Tree is projected to be open to the public by Spring 2012.

Old Style Light Bulb Banned

A European Union ban on the manufacture and import of 100-watt and frosted incandescent light bulbs, in use since the 19th century, has come into force. They are being phased out to encourage the switch to more energy-efficient fluorescent or halogen lamps, which use up to 80% less electricity. Several nations including Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada and the Philippines have also announced plans to phase out traditional bulbs. (Source - BBC news.)

Very strange !

Weird things are happening in France! There did run a middle aged woman , jogging, past my window with a dead rabbit dangling from one hand. I think it must be a road kill, it looked a kind of stiff, that she is planning to put in the pot. Bad luck I did not have my camera ready. Light was good ! Very strange.

Perils of being a photographer

Received an email to photograph "burnt flowers or plants as they can be good environmental issues!"

What happened... It cost me almost a night or two in jail !!!
There had been a bush fire that I past on my way for a swim. So I went back the next day to make some images. Seems I became a suspect as the fire was set by a pyromaniac. First one Gendarme car, than two, three and at last four. I became surrounded by 8 people. They told me they could hold me for 2 x 24 hours. The "Miranda rights" where mentioned. Great ! I was thinking their go's my day..... My motorcycle and I got frisked and I had to go to the station to make a statement what I was doing 'hanging around'. Lucky for me at the station, after having taken a look at my website, the Gendarmes started to become a little more relaxed and I did dare to ask why to hold a professional photographer ! 4 hours later I was home so all in all not so bad in the end. Plus now I am on record as the guy hanging around at places you should not show interest in... Don't know or that is good or bad.
